Last night (2) councillors rejected the application to redesign the current B&Q store in Lower Road, Belvedere, to create two separate retail units, a new 
mezzanine floor for B&Q and the other for an ASDA supermarket, selling food and clothes.

Senior Property Communications Manager, ASDA, Chris Martin, said: “We are extremely disappointed by the council’s decision. By rejecting our plans they have deprived the local community of 300 new jobs, increased shopping choice, road improvements and wider community benefits.

“They have also ignored the support we received from across the community including residents, businesses and those seeking jobs.

“Their decision was made despite the fact that the council’s own officers recommended approval and gave our plans a clean bill of health.

“We will consider all the options available to us once the council have decided on their reasons for refusal.”
