Strictly Come Dancing’s Joanne Clifton has been announced as the starring role in Flashdance - The Musical which is coming to theatres in Dartford, Tunbridge Wells and Canterbury for the first time since 2011.

Flashdance tells the story of 18-year-old Alex Owens - played by Joanne - a welder by day and flashdancer by night, who dreams of going to the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy and becoming a professional dancer. When a romance complicates her ambitions, she harnesses it to drive her dream.

Joanne became a household name as a professional dancer on the BBC competition, which she won in 2016 with TV and sports presenter Ore Oduba.

She has since toured as Streetwalker in Face The Music, and Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Joanne said: “I think everyone in the world, as soon as they hear What A Feeling, remembers that scene at the end of the film, and I’m incredibly lucky that I get to do that every night. It’s another amazing opportunity in my career and I can once again sing and act alongside dancing. I just hope the water is not too cold.”

Singer, songwriter Ben Adams will join Joanne on stage as Nick Hurley.

He wasthe lead singer of the band a1, who had two number ones and five studio albums.

When they split he took to the studio with the likes of Robin Thicke, Craig David, JLS, and Boyzone, becoming a writer and producer. He has also since reached the final of Celebrity Big Brother.

He said: “It’s amazing to be a part of such an iconic story, and as an 80s child I was brought up on this music so I couldn’t be happier playing Nick. Whilst I continue with my own music career, musical theatre has always been a real passion of mine, so to be asked to play this role, and to be working with such a great cast and crew is an honour. I look forward to seeing you all out on the road in the coming months.”

The show is coming to Dartford’s Orchard Theatre from October 9-14, Tunbridge Wells’ Assembly Hall from November 13-18, and Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre from June 18-23.
