THEY certainly know a thing or two about keeping the warmth in and the wet out at Musto.

Living in Kent, the chances are you or someone you know owns something with a Musto label in it – afterall we are a coastal county with a thriving sailing scene as well as being one of the home counties with many enjoying their country pursuits.

People buy Musto products because, at the end of the day, they know they can depend on them and that they will give years of service.

For more than 50 years, the company’s clothes have kept the sailing and the country fraternities warm and dry with the latest technology, great innovations and stylish design – and now you can add the skiing set too.

At the end of last year, the firm launched its first foray into this area and, as you would expect, it hit the ground running and produced a range of great looking, technically capable and practical ski/mountain clothing items for men and women.

I’ve just got back from a half-term skiing trip to the French Alps and can report that its Matthiessen BR1 PrimaLoft® Jacket is an instant classic. Not only is it warm, it is stylish and has more than enough pockets to deal with the goggles, phones, cameras, lip salves and chocolate bars a family of four carries with it.

A quick look at the company’s website says the new snow sport range was ‘Inspired by boat / ski, a sport undertaken in the spectacular and wild Fjords of Norway’.

And I can certainly vouch for the jacket’s practicality and warmth. Its made of something called PrimaLoft® and features a four-way stretch shell fabric and articulated sleeves… evidently.

All I can say is it is very comfortable, it keeps you warm and dry, and it never restricted movement on the slopes. Skiing with two under tens requires eyes in the back of your head, so I was constantly scanning my left and right as my kids helpfully headed off in different directions.

As you’d expect it features the usual features of a snow skirt, a removable, helmet-compatible hood and loads of pockets. It also comes with lycra inner cuffs with thumb holes and a zip away neck warmer. The latter is a great feature and one my son constantly wanted to borrow.

Oh and it looks cool too! Not that that’s a factor when you are carrying a rucksack, your own and your kids’ skis and have three helmets dangling from their straps, dangling from your arm. Skis and polls can have sharp edges and rough points and the Matthiessen jacket stood up perfectly to all the rigours of family skiing.

What more can I say? Musto have seemingly made a very shrewd move into an area it has plenty of background knowledge in – weather extremes. It’s a perfect fit!

Obviously, the skiing season is nearly over now but the next time you’re in the market for a new ski jacket or ski trousers then visit a Musto stockist or click on the website. The Matthiessen BR1 PrimaLoft® Jacket is available in blue and black and costs £449. To find out more about the firm and its products, visit
