Team GB boss Stuart Pearce has explained why Manchester United star Ryan Giggs was given the captaincy over Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, Manchester City’s Micah Richards and Liverpool’s Craig Bellamy.

The former England full back believes that the respect the Welshman has from all the players is what made him the standout candidate.

“Ryan Giggs is going to be captaining the squad for the duration of the tournament,” Pearce said.

“I looked at the squad and I thought there are some good candidates there.

“Aaron Ramsey captains Wales, Micah Richards has captained Manchester City at times, Craig Bellamy for the experience he’s had and one or two others within the camp as well.

“But I think Ryan is the standout captain amongst the group. He has got the respect of all the members of the group and I am quite looking forward to working with him and alongside him.”

The 38-year-old has won 12 Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues during his 21 year association with the Red Devils.
