Welling United player-manager Jamie Day hopes his absence for this weekend’s game against Havant & Waterlooville turns into a blessing rather than a curse for the team.

The Wings boss was sent off against Chelmsford City and begins a three-game suspension on Tuesday evening and sees the break as a chance for squad players to show their worth ahead of the end-of-season Blue Square Bet South run-in.

“It’s disappointing but at the same time it gives other players who’ve waited to play a chance to prove they should be in the team.” said Day.

“We’ve got the best squad we’ve had in a while so it’s not going to be a problem rotating round, and we’re going to need to rotate in the next two months because of the amount of games. It’s not just 11 players and everyone will play a part.”

Day highlighted Dean Cracknell, Lee Clarke and Andy Sambrook as three players who would give the team midfield momentum in his absence, as well as new signing Scott Kinch.

The ball-playing central midfielder could make his debut against Havant, as could new recruit Harry Baker, who signed from Dover Athletic recently.

“He can play on the wing or up front in a three, he’s another option for us. He’s got pace, and hopefully he can get some goals,” said Day, of Baker.

The Wings boss played down suggestions that because his side will not have played a match in over three weeks when they face Havant & Waterlooville on Tuesday, their performance will be adversely affected.

“Obviously we’d have liked to have played some games, but at the same time we’ve managed to get some boys fit who were carrying knocks.”

He added: “We’ve got a lot of games coming up now in the next two months, so the break might have done us good to prepare us.”
