Actions speak louder than character limited posts ever will
Yet another mental health campaign hit our screens this week, only succeeding to follow in the failing footsteps of its predecessors.
Even the title, #uOKm8? is nothing short of patronising. It is a digital pat on the head existing only to get hits online.
Celebrity stories and awareness campaigns can only go so far. To even scratch the surface of the single-biggest killer of men under 45, people need to understand that suicide won’t go away with a cleverly-placed emoji.
Sure, it is time to talk, another past-it campaign has already claimed ownership of that statement, but apparently that time passed quickly – the number of men killing themselves, unfortunately, did not fade away quite so quickly.
If people are willing to send a Tweet, they’ve succeeded in 30 seconds of support. Some say every little helps, but is that enough?
How about understanding suicide, and, more importantly, what comes before it? A little bit of knowledge can go a long way to providing a lot more support.
So how about putting the phone down, getting away from the computer, and looking your friend/partner/family member in the eye, and actually acting like you care for more than a minute?
