The man in charge of the borough’s fire brigade is set to help even more people in the coming months.

Graham Coles, borough commander of Bexley for London Fire Brigade, is set to take on the London Marathon.

He will be raising money for Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice.

He said: “I’m looking to raise £2000, and we’re currently up to around £770.

“I’m talking to people at Bluewater shopping centre to organise a static rowing event for myself, a few of the firefighters and cadets, there’s also the colour run in Danson Park later this year where we’ll be looking to raise some money.”

After stepping into the role of borough commander last August, Mr Coles met with the local hospice and was inspired by its role in the community.

The 48-year-old, who has spent 30 years with the Brigade, is no stranger to the challenge, having completed it once before in 2013.

Erith’s former station manager, the Rochester resident took on the challenge to raise money for Breast Cancer Research, after losing his mother to the disease.

He completed the 26.2mile course in four hours and 48 minutes, but pulled up injured with just a few miles to go.

This time the life-long firefighter has taken a different approach to training.

“Generally I run four times a week, the longest I run for is on a Sunday. It’s all part of a 16-week plan.

“If I can get a time of under four and half hours then I’ll be happy.”
