Bexley has missed out on a prestigious city-wide prize worth £1.35million after Waltham Forest and Brent were named London Boroughs of Culture for 2019 and 2022.

At a glamorous reception, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan revealed Waltham Forest’s bid had harnessed an incredible amount of support from local residents, while Brent’s had impressed with how it planned to involve the borough’s young people.

Before presenting the award, Mr Khan congratulated each of the 22 borough’s who took part in the competition for entering strong bids.

He said: “Clearly a great deal of thought, effort and hard work went in to each of these submissions so I want to say a big thank you to all the councillors, cabinet members, celebs, MPs, school children and so many others who devoted so much energy to assembling and championing their bids.”

Bexley also missed out on the Mayor’s Cultural Impact Awards, that recognised specific innovative projects within a borough’s bid.

Six of these were handed out, and they went to Barking and Dagenham, Camden, Kingston, Lambeth, Lewisham and Merton.
