Tom Torode Sims scooped the London-wide award last week

An apprentice has managed to beat competition from across London to scoop a top council award.

Tom Torode-Sims was given the ‘best contribution by a new apprentice’ at the London Councils’ Apprenticeship event last week.

Having joined as a level three apprentice in the waste and recycling team at Bexley council, Mr Torode-Sims was signed on permanently in July.

Since joining, the 21-year-old has helped more than 30,000 people sign up to a new garden waste scheme.

Having beaten apprentices from across the capital, Bexley’s cabinet member for education, Rob Leitch, offered his praise following the win.

“I’m delighted that Tom has been recognised by London Councils in this way.” Said Cllr Leitch.

“His hard work and commitment to the scheme have been invaluable to the team. I know they are very proud of their youngest member, and rightly so. I wish him the very best of luck for the future.”

The award-winning apprentice is ready to keep up the good work too, it seems.

“It’s a great feeling to receive recognition and praise hopefully this award will be the first of many!” Boasted Mr Torode-Sims, who has spent the last two years at the council.

Judges at the wards recognised his ‘passion, methodical approach and customer service skills’.

Mr Torode-Sims had previously described his nomination as ‘the proudest moment of my career so far’, and picked up his award on Friday September 16, beating finalists from Croydon, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Kingston.

There are currently apprenticeship vacancies across the council.
