Bexley Bowlers’ joy over £40,000 Olympic legacy grant

A group of five bowls clubs, including a centre for the blind, have secured a £40,000 Olympic legacy grant.

The cash will be used to replace two concrete ditches supporting two lawn bowling greens.

Without the repair work, the greens in Danson Park, Bexleyheath, would have become impossible to use due to the crumbling state of the ditches causing subsidence to the surfaces.

Chairman of the consortium, Peter Cooper, 73, from Welling, said: “Receiving the grant is absolutely fantastic. This work has been needed for the past two years.

“They will be able to level it out which will make it easier for access onto and off the green.”

The Danson Park Bowls Consortium of five bowls clubs, includes a men’s group founded in 1933, a ladies’ group, a club for the blind, a veterans’ club and a mixed sex club.

The money comes from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Olympic Legacy Fund.

Paul Hoffman, treasurer of the Danson Park Bowls Consortium, said: “The support and award from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Olympic Legacy Fund will enable us to continue with our commitment to encourage and introduce our sport to all the community of Bexley which is already enjoyed by many hundreds of bowlers on our greens.”

The funding ensures an Olympic legacy in Bexley and follows a £39,000 legacy windfall for Bexley Cricket Club in October.
