Bexley police warn residents about bogus officers

16:53 02 April 2013

Two pensioners were scammed out of £1,500 by bogus police officers in Bexley last month.

There have been nine similar incidents across the borough in the last year and police are warning residents to stay vigilant.

An 88-year-old woman was conned out of £1,200 when a man purporting to be a policeman called her. He asked for cash which would then be marked to help them catch criminals.

The victim was tricked into thinking it was a genuine operation and someone came to her door to collect the money. He is described as white, in his 40s, with a moustache and wearing a black flat cap.

Det Ch Insp Gary Holmes said: “These are simple and yet complex scams that are devastating for the people these criminals are preying on.

“At the time they seem so real that victims want to do the right thing and help police, even to the extent of handing over cash and personal financial details.

“These criminals are organised and ruthless in their determination to trick the public, often out of their life savings.”

The second incident saw a 74-year-old man hand over his bank card and £300 was withdrawn from his account.

If you have any information call Bexleyheath CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
