Anyone from the borough will be able to use the service, which offers a not-for-profit alternative when it comes to financial services as opposed to high street banks and lenders.

President of GCU Alan Stevens said: “Times are really tough at the moment and a large number of local people are looking for an alternative way to save and manage their money.

“We are therefore delighted to offer people in Bexley the chance to borrow from an ethical, not-for-profit alternative to high street banks and payday lenders.”

The service has been operating in Greenwich since 1998 and members must save at least £10 a month for three months to apply for their first loan through GCU.
