Bexleyheath weightlifter Jack Oliver smashed his personal best and equalled the British record as he finished fourth in the first set of lifters this morning.
Following on from a similarly record breaking performance from Abbey Wood’s Zoe Smith on Monday, the 21-year-old lifted a combined 310kg (140kg in the snatch, where the weights are lifed straight over the head, and 170kg in the clean and jerk, which involves lifting them to the chest and then over the head) in the 77kg class.
It will not be enough to win a medal with eight athletes lifting later this evening but it will stand Oliver, who trains at the Europa Centre in Crayford, in good stead for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Spaniard Andres Eduardo Mata Perez was top of the group with a total of 338kg.
A Welling man is one of nine who have been charged with violent disorder in connection with the trouble which marred Millwall Football Club’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on April 13.
