The 18-year-old from Abbey Wood received a rapturous reception as she was introduced to the ExCel Arena crowd and responded by lifting 121kg in the clean and jerk along with 90kg in the snatch, leaving her trailing only Ecuador’s Maria Alexandra Escobar Guerrero.

A medal looks beyond her with 11 women lifting later today in the 58kg class but a top 10 finish is well within reach on the former Townley Grammar pupil’s Olympic debut.
