A SCREWDRIVER wielding burglar attacked a policeman while he tried to stop him breaking into a house.

The incident happened at 4.50am on Tuesday as police responded to reports that three men were trying to break into a house in Abbey Wood. Two of the men ran off while another got on a bicycle.

The policeman ran after them but was attacked with a long shaft screwdriver by one of the men while he tried to restrain him. He suffered a cut half-an-inch from his eye and had to have two stitches.

A youth was arrested shortly after the incident and has since been bailed.

Two men, aged 18 and 19, were arrested on Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of attempted burglary and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They remain in custody.

Acting Detective Inspector Steve Underwood, said: "Thanks to the actions of a passing motorist we were able to respond to the attempted burglary and prevent a traumatic experience for the resident. But this could easily have resulted in the officer receiving more serious injuries or a member of the public being attacked."
