Bexley Council has shown its support

Plans to extend the Crossrail 1 trainline from Abbey Wood to Gravesend have received further backing, the latest from Bexley Council.

Last week, a case was submitted to the National Infrastructure Commission, on behalf of Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, London Borough of Bexley, Gravesham Borough Council, Dartford Borough Council, Kent County Council, the Mayor of London and the Thames Gateway Kent Partnership.

The partnership has been working to test the scheme and is set to present its finding to the government next month.

Crossrail 1 was originally planned to run to Hoo Junction, and land has been safeguarded to make this possible.

Leader of Bexley Council Teresa O’Neill said: “The existing north Kent line will not support the growth we aspire to deliver.

“More capacity is needed beyond what can be provided within the Southeastern train franchise or by Transport for London taking over he Kent Metro services.

“Bexley and north Kent are uniquely located between the capital, channel ports and less than an hour from major airports.

“Extending Crossrail 1 presents a rail opportunity and we look forward to discussing this further with the Commission.”

The latest case was also supported by current chairman of Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, Michael Cassidy.

He said: “This partnership is important to delivering growth in the Thames Gateway Corridor.

“The Thameside areas of Bexley and north Kent will deliver significant economic growth and more than 55,000 much needed new homes.

“Investment in major infrastructure and public transport is key in unlocking this potential.”
