CHILDHOOD sweethearts, who have known each other since they were eight-years-old, are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.

Ken Cardand his wife Mavis, both 80, of Pear Tree Lane, Shorne, will have been married for 60 years today.

The couple, who met each other at Bedonwell Junior School, Bedonwell Road, Belvedere, first got together when they just 15-years-old.

The couple married five years later in 1949, at All Saints Church, Belvedere.

Mrs Card said: "We have known each other for such a long time and we have been very good friends all these years, I think that is the reason why we have stayed together for so long.

"I hope there are many more happy years to come."

The couple got married after Mr Card had completed National Serve in the Navy.

They lived in Bexleyheath and Dulwich, where Mr Card's parents lived, before moving to Clapham, south London.

Mr Card, a former Chief Superintendent for the Metropolitan Police, based at Greenwich, said: "I have known Mavis for so many years and there are many reasons why we have stayed together, but mainly because we are just good friends and we get on so well with each other."

The couple, who have two daughters, Beverley, 53, and Karen, 50, and four grandchildren, moved to Shorne 25 years ago, after their daughters settled in Gravesend.

Mr and Mrs Card and their two daughters and families are flying to Tenerife tomorrow to celebrate the milestone and had a meal at Brandshatch Place, Fawkham, last Sunday.

Daughter Karen Giannini said: "Speaking on behalf of both me and my sister, we are both very proud of our parents reaching their diamond wedding anniversary. We both hope there are many happy years to come.

"We have both been married for a long time ourselves and I think it is because of the strong relationship we saw from mum and dad.

"Congratulations to both of them.
