Kent’s Joe Denly admitted the second day of their County Championship Division Two match at Leicestershire had been a tough one for batting.

The visitors were dismissed for 195 in reply to Leicestershire’s first innings 220, with Denly (62) top scoring and putting on 57 with Ollie Robinson (26).

And Ivan Thomas took 4-50 as the home side were reduced to 126-5 in their second innings, for a lead of 151 heading into the third day.

Denly said: “It was tough out there for batsmen, you just had to find a way. Mine were ugly runs, but it was case of staying out there as long as possible and getting what you could on a wicket offering the seamers movement and inconsistent bounce.

“Ollie Robinson was great on debut, on a wicket not ideal for a batsman, and it was a vital little partnership we had. It was frustrating for me to get on when I did, just before lunch.

“The game is very much in the balance though. Ivan Thomas was great, he was aggressive, he put their batters under pressure, and that’s the attitude we have to have tomorrow (Tuesday) – go out and get those last five wickets for as few runs as possible and then have a clear plan as batters to chase down whatever they set us.”
