More than 30 MPs from across the country are helping to spread the word

A local MP has leant her voice to spread the word of a crippling disease that affects thousands of people each year.

Lyme Disease is estimated to have up to 45,000 new cases annually, but as the tick-borne infection is not listed as a notifiable disease in the UK, the number of new cases per year is entirely unknown.

Estimates start from as low as 3,000 cases a year.

If untreated, the disease can become a chronic, debilitating and disabling condition.

Parliamentarians from across the country attended an event this week to raise awareness of the disease.

Teresa Pearce, MP for Erith and Thamesmead, said: “Thee is a real lack of awareness of the dangers which Lyme Disease presents those infected, and many GPs are not aware of how best to treat it.

“I was pleased to host this event in Parliament to highlight Lyme Disease and hope that with greater awareness of the disease and its implications, those suffering with it can receive better treatment.”
