Erith firefighters complete Three Peaks Challenge

Firefighters from Erith station took on a different challenge as they scaled Britain’s three tallest mountains to raise money for cancer research – straight after their second consecutive night shift.
Nine members of the Red Watch crew set off from the station in Erith Road last Wednesday (May 16) before starting their ascent of Ben Nevis the following day at 5am. They were raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support by tackling the National Three Peaks Challenge.
The team then travelled five hours to tackle Scafell Pike in the Lake District before completing the mammoth challenge by climbing Snowdon in Wales.
Tough
Firefighter Andrew McArthur said: “It was very tough but we made it home in one piece. We completed it within the given time and we’re just trying to shake off our aches and pains now.”
This is the first time members of the crew have completed the Three Peaks. Ben Nevis 4,409ft above sea level, or 1,344m, Scafell Pike is 3,209ft or 978m while Snowdon is 3,560ft or 1.085m.
The firefighters took on the three obstacles over the course of 24 hours.
