The Bexleyheath golfer was the best amateur at The Open this year

Alfie Plant’s professional debut got off to a slow start on Thursday after finishing three over par at the Portugal Masters.

The former Dartford postman, who lives in Bexleyheath, picked up a silver medal at The Open this year after he shot the best round of any amateur at Royal Birkdale in July,

Mr Plant, a member of Sundridge Park Golf Club in Bromley, will resume his European Tour debut today after scoring 74 on the opening day.

The score leaves him above five other players in the competition.

Higher up the table, Holland’s Joost Luiten bounced back from the disappointment of an early exit in defence of his KLM Open title to claim a share of the lead after day one.

Luiten carded seven birdies in a bogey-free 64 in Vilamoura which was matched by South Africa’s George Coetzee, with England’s Callum Shinkwin part of a five-strong group on six under par.
