Former Welling pupil Gemma Gibbons won Britain’s first Olympic judo medal in 12 years with a silver in the ExCel Arena.

The 25-year-old, who went to Harris Academy Falconwood (formerly Westwood College) lost to American Kayla Harrison in the final today after defeating French world champion Audrey Tcheumeo in the semis earlier in the afternoon.

Gibbons trains at Dartford Judo Centre and was competing in her first Olympics, fighting in the 78kg and under class.
