The family of a Bexleyheath television executive who was burned to death in the boot of his car have asked the Attorney General to reconsider the “lenient” sentence imposed on the friend who lured him to his doom

Businessman Gagandip Singh, 21, a respected member of the Sikh community, was attacked and murdered in February last year.

His family have formally filed a request asking Dominic Grieve, QC, to look at the six year sentence in a young offenders’ institute imposed on Mundill Mahil, 20, at the Old Bailey claiming it is “unduly lenient”.

His sister Amandip Singh, 19, said: “I feel that six years is not enough, she was the main part of it. She will be out in three.

“What I think would be much better is if it was double figures and she was in prison for over ten years.”

Miss Singh said she met medical student Mahil only once, but described her as a very close friend of her brother.

Gagandip, who lived in Langdale Crescent, Bexleyheath, was killed after Mahil lured him to her flat where two men lay in wait. During the trial, the court heard claims that Gagandip had tried to rape Mahil months earlier and she wanted revenge.

Miss Singh said the attempted rape allegations had never been proved in court.

Harvinder Shoker and Darren Peters set upon Gagandip at Mahil’s Gladstone Place, Brighton, flat and put his body in the boot of his car before abandoning it in Angerstein Road, Blackheath, where they set it alight. Gagandip was alive at the time.

Judge Paul Worsley sentenced Mahil for grievous bodily harm with intent on February 29. She denied murder.

Mr Grieve will have to decide whether to refer the sentence to the Court of Appeal.

Shoker, 20, of Charlton Park Lane, Greenwich, was convicted of murder and will serve a minimum of 22 years in jail.

Peters, 20, of Shooters Hill Road, was convicted of manslaughter and got 12 years in a young offenders institute.

Friends of Gangandip have launched a petition on the www.ipetitions.com website calling for Mahil’s sentence to be re-examined. Visit http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/appealing-six-year-sentence-for-gbh-with-intent/
