Consultation has started on the borough’s new draft Library Strategy

Consultation has started on the borough’s new draft library strategy and on plans to remodel the library service. The council are seeking public views on these proposals.

This follows a recent national survey by the government, which discovered that 35% of adults reported that that they had visited a library in the previous 12 months, compared to 48% in 2005/6. The number of library visits, items issued and ‘active borrowers’ have all fallen.

Similar trends have been recorded in Bexley.

Reasons for the decline include the growing use of e-book readers, the reduced cost of best sellers, increased take-up of online services, together with the reduced demand for information and public computers because of the growing use of Google and mobile technology.

The borough’s new draft Library Strategy aims to ensure that the service meets the future needs of local people.

It also reflects the financial pressures facing the Council and last year’s decision to reduce spending on Bexley’s libraries.

The council proposes to deliver the library service from six libraries, with longer hours, probably through removing the current half day closures, and extra services.

These libraries are Central Library in Bexleyheath, Crayford, Erith, Sidcup, Thamesmead and Welling

The Council is proposing to seek partnerships with community focused organisations to manage the following libraries - Blackfen, Bostall, Northumberland, HeathUpper and Belvedere.
