Both tunnels were later reopened

Motorists faced hours of delays on the M25 last night, after both tunnels at the Dartford Crossing were shut.

Highways England quoted ‘safety reasons’ for the closure, which lasted from 6pm until 10.30pm.

A spokesperson said: “The incident is affecting critical traffic management systems at the Dartford Crossing and both tunnels between junction 2 (for the A2) and junction 31 (Thurrock) of the M25 have been closed for safety reasons.”

Severe delays on the approach meant motorists were forced to use different routes, causing queues in other areas, including the Blackwall Tunnel.

Vehicles stuck in the closure were released through the tunnels via a convoy, to safely make their way across.

This morning (Monday) motorists heading in to Essex are facing heavy traffic, with queues heading back to junction two.
