Crews checked over the man who had since climbed back onto the tug


He was rescued on Sunday

Lifeboat crews checked over a man who had spent more than an hour clinging onto a tug in the Thames Water on Sunday.

Crew from Gravesend’s RNLI station were called out to the Erith area at around 7.25pm on Sunday after reports of a man in the water.

The casualty was reportedlyt clinging on to a tug in the river, and the Met Police’s Marine Unit and the PLA Harbour Launch were both sent to the scene.

On arrival, crews discovered the man had managed to get on-board the tug, and a health assessment was carried out.

A spokesperon from Gravesend RNLI said: “It was decided that he would be transfered to Erith Causeway where he would be handed over into the care of an awaiting ambulance crew.

“The lifeboat was then released from service and returned to station.

A spokesperson from London Ambulance Service confirmed it sent an ambulance and its Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.
