A hospital report has slated Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup for the dirty conditions which it serves food to patients in.

Following a Freedom of Information request by the Sun newspaper, it is claimed staff at the Frognal Avenue hospital put knifes away dirty and found mouldy chopping boards.

It also said there was a serious cockroach infestation in a food cellar.

The Patient Action Group recently held a protest at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich to express concern at how the trust is running the hospitals with criticism over cuts to services.

The group’s Helen Ellis said: “This doesn’t surprise me at all and goes along with the all-round running of the hospitals.

“Last week I went to visit an elderly couple in Queen Mary’s and the conditions they were served their food in left a lot to be desired.”

The trust is estimated to be £70 million in debt and there have been suggestions that the Sidcup hospital will be forced to close down.

The maternity and accident and emergency departments were closed down completely in 2010.

SLHT say that the Sun quotes a report from 2011 and standards have improved considerably since then.

A trust spokesman said: “All issues relating to cleaning and equipment have been fully resolved. All staff have undergone re-training on cleaning standards and a deep clean of the kitchen and all storage areas have been carried out.

“The trust continues to support its cleaning partner Aramark in maintenance issues.”

The report found that 541 of the 731 hospital kitchens were found to be dirty, claiming Queen Mary had the seventh worst conditions nationwide.
