The building, which has been vacant since 2005, will become the new Civic Centre, while 126 new homes will be constructed at its rear.

Barnehurst ward councillors praised the committee’s decision, saying a weight had been lifted from many residents after a long period of speculation and uncertainty.

Simon Windle said: “We are pleased that Tesco never gained permission for a megastore there and that an iconic building will continue to be used for office accommodation.”
