The figures showed that 49 people were killed or seriously injured in 2011, compared to 68 people killed or seriously injured in 2010, which is a significant difference.

The recent figures released by Transport for London and the Department of Transport also show that in 2011 Bexley saw an overall 3% decrease in road casualties compared to 2010.

Cllr Graham D’Amiral, Bexley’s spokesperson for the Transport Users Sub Committee said: “Our aim is to prevent injuries and deaths on the road by educating children about road safety from a young age.

“The comprehensive programme of road safety education we provide aims at making it practical and engaging for children throughout their school life.”

Bexley has a higher rate of children cycling to and from school compared to many London Boroughs and last year its child cyclist casualties fell by 64% .

The number of child cyclists killed or seriously injured fell by 100% which puts Bexley at the top of the seven south east London boroughs.
