A special ceremony was held at Harris Garrard Academy to mark its first academic year.

The new school replaced the Business Academy Bexley, Yarnton Way, Erith, in September 2017.

Now part of the Harris Federation, recognised by government league tables as the top performing multi academy trust in England, Harris Garrard Academy has benefited from major investment in its building as well as improvements in leadership and teaching.

The ceremony was attended by Lord Harris of Peckham, the founder and chairman of the Harris Federation.

He told the children: “Changing the building has been important, but most important is giving you an excellent education.

“You are going to make this school really outstanding.”

Chris Everitt, executive principal of the academy, said: “When the school opened, we knew a lot had to change.

“But students and staff have been wonderful, really rising to the challenge.

“There is still further to go, but we are determined to set standards of excellence.”
