An MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup has backed a bill to strengthen controls on scrap metal dealers to clamp down on them dealing in stolen metal.

James Brokenshire was especially dismayed by the theft of the plaque from Sidcup’s War Memorial in Rectory Lane.

He said: “Our churches and community monuments feel the impact of this crime.

“In London, 16 brass monuments were stolen from different monuments over the past two years, including in Sidcup.
