Residents are being warned to prepare for flooding in the South East after heavy rain overnight and with strong winds and further showers predicted today.

The Thames Barrier closed yesterday to minimise flooding risks and the Environment Agency is working around the clock to check flooding defences and close tidal gates.

The agency has issued severe flood warnings for coastal communities as strong winds combine with high tides and large waves from the early hours of today.

Up to 15mm of rain was expected overnight and strong winds with gusts of up to 50mph are predicted today.

Thousands of people who live in flood-affected areas in Kent are being advised to take care.

More information and advice can be found on the Environment Agency’s website – environment-agency.co.uk.

Residents can also follow @EnvAgencySE and #floodaware on Twitter for further updates for the south east region.
