Police raided a number of properties on Thursday morning

Police raids have seen five arrested after a fake email saw a company hand over £25,000 earlier this year.

Homes in Thamesmead, Essex and Dorset were raided in the early hours of Thursday morning, after hackers got hold of a Tunbridge Wells company’s email account in April this year.

It is alleged the hack saw one of the company’s clients pay £25,000 to a third party after receiving a scam email.

Officers believe access was gained to the firm’s database through malicious software, also known as malware, emailed from a Herne Bay internet address that is also believed to have been hacked.

A 32-year-old Thamesmead woman was arrested on suspicion of an offence under Section 2 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990.

Police arrested two 17-year-olds, a boy and a girl, in Essex, along with a 36-year-old woman, on suspicion of money laundering.

A 19-year-old Dorset woman was arrested for the same offence.
