Brownes in Tavy Bridge is one of a number of shops which will have to close on September 28 because of a major redevelopment by Gallions Housing Association.

The jobs of the 4 employees will be at risk.

Co-owner Ramesh Patel said: “We’re not having any luck finding anywhere and it’s the customers who are really going to suffer because there is a real community feel to the shop.

“There is some space at the nearby health centre but they’re asking for ridiculous rents.

Brownes’ owners were told last October they would have to find a new site for the store because it does not fit into the new complex, to be called Southmere Village.

A spokeswoman for the association said: “We are continuing to work with shopkeepers to help them find alternative units where possible.

“The regeneration of Southmere Village is now in its third phase and once completed will transform the area.”
