Some 40mm of rain could fall over two or three hours later this week

Flooding could hit the county over the coming days after weather chiefs issued a yellow rain warning for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Met Office has warned of downpours leading to surface water flooding, difficult driving conditions and disruption to transport, although the next 18 hours in Kent are expected to be dry, with some sunny spells.

Tuesday morning could see some isolated thunderstorms, and while many places are expected to miss the heaviest of the rain, there could be two to three hours of downpours in some areas, with up to 40mm potentially falling.

Later on Tuesday night the rain which moved north will return south as a frontal feature bringing further locally heavy showers.

On Wednesday, the rain is expected to become slow-moving across all areas during the day with heavy downpours at times throughout the day.

A spokesperson added: “We expect to see 20-40 mm of rain quite widely with a few places potentially seeing 20-30 mm of rain in just two or three hours.

“There is some uncertainty around where the heaviest rain is likely to fall and how heavy the rain could be but there is the potential for a few isolated locations to see as much as 60-80 mm of rain during the day.”
