10-20 mm of rain could fall in just an hour in some places

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread across Kent this morning, after a warm weekend throughout the county.

Weather chiefs are warning of difficult driving conditions, disruption to transport, surface water flooding and isolated power outages until 6pm this evening as torrential downpours hit some areas of the south east.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “We could see 10-20 mm of rain in just an hour with a few isolated locations possibly seeing as much as 30 mm.

“Lightning could be another additional hazard which could lead to isolated power outages.

“As with any showery situation some places will see the heavy or intense showers while many places could remain dry.”

Showers are expected to clear in most areas later this afternoon or early evening but rain, locally heavy, is expected to spread east during Tuesday.

The rain will clear on Wednesday morning to leave a fine day, bosses add.

Isolated showers are expected on Thursday and Friday but there will be a good deal of dry weather with sunny spells too.
