Welling United’s pre-season campaign started with a 5-0 defeat at home to Charlton Athletic on Saturday (July 6).

Charlton gave Welling a guard of honour before the game to honour their Conference South title last season but they were less accommodating after the game started.

The Wings played almost entirely different teams in the first-half and second-half, with only defender Fraser Franks surviving the cut as preparations for the new season continued.

Joe Pigott, who was on loan at Bromley last season, scored a hat-trick for the Addicks and Yann Kermorgant and Danny Green also got on the scoresheet.

The Wings found themselves 4-0 down at half-time but improved in the second period, although they could not score a consolation goal.
