Blackheath & Bromley sprinter ends speculation and confirms his intention to compete at London 2012

Britain’s fastest man Adam Gemili has confirmed his intention to compete at the Olympics, after coming second in Saturday’s trials in Birmingham.

The 18-year-old became an overnight sensation when he clocked 10.08 seconds in a 100metres race in Germany earlier this month – surpassing the A standard by a cool 0.10 seconds.

But, ahead of the weekend’s racing, Gemili was still uncertain of a shock inclusion to Team GB as the big names in British sprinting had their chance to knock the teenager off his perch.

However, his solid run in Saturday evening’s final – finishing second to Dwain Chambers – ensured the place is his, although some reports suggested he may snub the home Games on the advice of his coach Michael Afilaka.

But the Blackheath & Bromley Harriers ace has been quick to dispel that myth and insists he will take his place alongside Usain Bolt and the cream of world sprinting in Stratford.

“It won’t be confirmed officially until July 2, but I fully intend to take my place,” Gemili confirmed.

“Even if I don’t actually get to run, just to experience the village and be part of the team will be fantastic.

“I’m still going to the world juniors (in Barcelona on July 10-15) and determined to do what I need to to be successful out there.

“The Olympics is a bonus, the world juniors was always going to be my main competition this year, so I won’t be taking it lightly.”
