Individual silver medallist Christine Ohuruogu given too bigger task as GB finish in fifth.

It was disappointment for the 4x400m women’s relay squad as they were never in medal contention before finishing fifth in the final.

Being drawn in lane nine was always going to be a difficult task for Woodford Green AC with Essex Ladies athlete Shana Cox, but by the end of her 52.50 second lap Great Britain were down in sixth place.

And by the time all the athletes filtered into the inside lane and Cox had passed onto Lee McConnell the chances of a medal where already slim.

Bow’s Perri Shakes-Drayton produced the best lap of the quartet, 50.40 , and moved the team ahead of Nigeria, but still a distance behind Russia and Jamaica who were battling it our for silver and bronze, with the United States way out in front.

Shakes-Drayton passed the baton onto Newham & Essex Beagles Christine Ohuruogu, the 400m silver medallist, and despite a 50.60 second lap the 28-year-old was unable to move the Brits any further up as they crossed the line in 3.24.76, a season’s best for the quartet.
