The Team GB pair had both impressed in their opening heats, dipping below the 23-second mark, but were unable to reproduce that level of performance against a strong semi-final field.

Enfield & Haringey star Adeoye clocked 23:28 as she finished seventh in the first semi-final, which was dominated by double Olympic gold medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown and Carmelita Jeter, who has already won a silver medal in the 100m at London 2012.

Oyepitan, the Harlesden athlete who was bidding to match her feat of making the 200m final at Athens 2004, started well in her semi but faded after the bend.

The 32-year-old eventually finished sixth in 23:14, well adrift of 400m gold medallist Sanya Richards-Ross – the fastest qualifier for Wednesday’s final with a time of 22:30.
