Why the latest ‘leaks’ really aren’t that shocking

Not for the first time, the world is in shock that technology is being used to monitor us.

Documents released by website Wikileaks claims the CIA, together with British spies, can use TVs as microphones, and bypass encrypted messaging apps.

I can’t imagine how bored the person listening in to the country’s living room conversations must be.

But for anyone feeling shocked or appalled, this is just another reality check, albeit quite an obvious one.

Digital dependence is the Achilles heel of our right to privacy.

It’s a doorway into our lives which is far easier to open than most people realise, for better or worse.

The truth is, the so called ‘bad guys’ probably use the same technology as most of us in their day to day lives, so why wouldn’t the CIA know how to hack in?

We can live with the hope that our lives are mostly bland enough that Bond-wannabes wouldn’t spend their nine to five shift tuning in.

But in reality we should begin to face the fact that the world is fast becoming a place where everything could be recorded - such ideas are not a matter of fiction anymore.

So instead of letting the shock die down and moving on to the next headline, perhaps its time more people stood up for our digital rights, before they disappear.
