A female figure, draped and posed in an heroic stance; huge bronze faces representing the people who built the town; a 16-foot diameter lamp, and a sculptural form of a bird’s wing are the ideas put forward for the redevelopment next to the former town hall building in Crayford Road, Crayford.

A trio of leading sculptors and a landscape architect have created the designs which will be funded by developers R&M Projects and supermarket chain Sainsbury’s.

Among them is internationally renowned artist Andy Scott who created a steel horse sculpture in Belvedere. He has produced the female figure design for Crayford.

Cabinet member for leisure, Cllr Peter Catterall, said: “All the artists have tried to capture Crayford’s rich history in their designs and we very much hope that their attempts to encapsulate that history and identity in art will fire people’s imaginations.”

The designs are on show at Crayford Library until October 15 as well as on the Bexley Council website.

Public consultation sessions will take place in the town hall tomorrow (Friday), Saturday and in Crayford Sainsbury’s on Wednesday.
