Host Lauren Laverne will announce the winners at 5.30pm today at a ceremony at the Hospital Club, Covent Garden, before a 30-minute show to be broadcast on Channel Four later tonight.

The unveiling of the shortlist of 12 albums will kick start a series of live gigs by nominated artists ahead of the final awards show on November 1.

A spokesman for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize said: “The Prize recognises and celebrates music in the UK and has a reputation for highlighting both new talent and more established bands and artists.

“The shortlist is chosen by an independent judging panel and provides a snapshot of the year in music, recognising artistic achievement across a range of music genres.”
