DESPITE being delivered a week late and facing opposition from councillors, the Greenwich Observation Wheel has finally opened.

Panoramic views across London can now be goggled at from the London-Eye styled wheel, opened in the Old Royal Naval College grounds, Greenwich, last Friday.

The 55-metre high structure holds 36 capsules big enough for six adults and two children, up above the London skyline between 10am and 10pm every day until September.

Each ride lasts around 12 minutes, and immediately gives a rare birds-eye view of the Old Royal Naval College.

As the wheel turns, The Queen's House emerges from behind the 300-year-old college, framed by the rolling grass of Greenwich Park and the Royal Observatory.

Looking towards central London you can see a much clearer version of the view from the James Wolfe statue in Greenwich Park.

If you look really hard to the east, you can just about make out the dustbowl soon to become the Olympic Games complex.

However most enjoyable was the sight of Greenwich and Charlton spread out beneath, under the towering green backdrop of Bostall Woods and Lesnes Abbey Woods.

Last year Greenwich council tried to block the wheel arguing it would ruin the area's historical skyline.

Greenwich Market traders saidit would attract tourists whilst the Cutty Sark was being renovated, and the Greenwich Society supported the scheme.

It will now stand in Greenwich until September 28, however with prices for the 12-minute ride starting at £7 an adult and £4.50 a child, be sure to make the most of it.

Private capsule hire costs £30 and a VIP capsule including leather seats and a DVD player costs £50. Champagne can be taken up for an extra £30.
