How the Crossrail trains might look

The £16billion railway network which will regenerate Abbey Wood is closer to getting under way, with tunelling work due to begin in the new year.

Final preparations are being made to the tunnelling machine, named Sophia, which will help link Abbey Wood to central London via Plumstead.

Sophia is 110m long, weighs more than 1,000 tonnes and will drill from Abbey Wood to North Woolwich.

Crossrail will continue to Canary Wharf and central London as well as Berkshire in the west and Essex in the east.

A 25 per cent rise in Abbey Wood house prices is forecast.
