Bexley council is warning residents to be on their guard against telephone fraudsters who claim to be from the council's billing department.

One resident was contacted and told that his home had been placed in a lower council tax banding and so was due a refund.

The caller then asked for bank account details, but the resident became suspicious and hung up.

Community councillor Katie Perrior said: "This is a despicable scam. I am grateful to the resident who brought this incident to our attention. Our advice to anyone who gets these calls is to do the same - refuse to tell them anything and simply hang up.

"We do not cold-call anyone asking for bank details. Any such correspondence would always be by post with the name and details of the officer clearly displayed."
