Bexley council are gearing up for National Diabetes Awareness Week by running a campaign encouraging residents to lead healthier lifestyles.

June 11 marks the start of the awareness campaign. Around 22,000 people with diabetes die early every year, but help is at hand for Bexley residents, with a new prevention programme now available.

Healthier You helps individuals at risk of developing type two diabetes to significantly reduce their chances of getting the disease.

As part of the programme participants receive advice on how to eat well and change their lifestyles.

Luis Quintas Claro, a programme participant, said: “When we go to the course, we discuss things that motivate you.

“It’s about healthy alternatives and small lifestyle changes. They’re not massive changes, just things that really add up and make a difference.”
