Ernest Elphick turned 90 on August 3

A 90-year-old Belvedere man has been reunited with the iconic brand that saw his face spread across the country.

In 1927, Mr Elphick was chosen as the ‘smiler’ seen on logo of thousands of Cow & Gate milk powder tins - branded the food of royal babies.

Nearly 90 years on, his grandson, Stuart Foy, posted on the milk company’s Facebook page, letting them know of his celebrity grandfather’s birthday.

Social media manager Abi Jennings said: “We were delighted to see Stuart’s post and to be reunited with Ernest. He’s played a big part in our brand’s heritage and so we decided we must help him celebrate his big day.

Cow & Gate worked with Stuart to surprise Ernest at his family birthday lunch party in Belvedere, with a giant 3-D cake, shaped like the original tin he once featured on.
