Bexley Archives is undertaking a project to record servicemen named on borough war memorials.

Sue Barclay from the archives said: “Our local war memorials remind us what happened and the 20th century was the bloodiest in history.

“The war memorials remind of the consequences of what happened in the region and also those left behind to cope with the confusion which followed.”

There are memorials in Bexleyheath, Welling, Old Bexley, East Wickham, Belvedere and at St Mary’s Church in Bexley.

The Bexleyheath and Welling branch of the British Royal Legion opened a garden of remembrance at Christ Church in Bexleyheath last Saturday to commemorate those lost in battle.
