Bexley bootcamp trainers flex their pecs for Sport Relief calendar

Glistening six packs, rippling biceps and dancing pecs – it’s what most fitness fans aspire to.
To show off the fruits of their labour, trainers at Strictly Bootcamp in Sidcup have released a calendar for the new year. It’s the brainchild of boot camp owner Andy Blackwell and his model partner Camilla Tranter to raise money for charity.
The trainers spend seven days a week chiselling their physiques so it comes as a surprise to hear more than a few were a little camera shy.
“They were a bit reluctant at first,” explains Andy. “Usually people would see trainers as quite body confident, but we saw another side – it was quite funny.
“We were all a bit conscious about different parts of our bodies but it just shows you what drives people to keep training. I had to keep reminding them that they looked good.”
Having donated to Sport Relief in the past, the Orpington couple sought ways to raise a significant sum.
With a modelling career spanning more than a decade, Camilla found a photographer and designer who gave their services for charity.
“I’m usually on the other side of the camera,” she says. “I’ve got to know a lot of the guys through doing the boot camps myself and they all like a bit of banter.
“A few of them did ask if they actually had to take their shirts off but I assured them it wasn’t ever going to be tacky – no Santa hats covering their bits. Though I have warned them they may have to flash a bit more flesh next year.”
With graphic designer Shahnaz Ahmed on board, who created the last two red noses for Comic Relief, the calendar was put together in just a month and more than half of the entire initial batch was sold on the first day of release last week.
People are buying them for friends and family, including grandmothers, according to Andy – but Camilla says the calendars are also a chance for Strictly Bootcamp’s clients to show off their trainers.
“Typically people buy calendars with random babes or hunks on, but these are people they actually know,” she says. “Probably 90 per cent of our clients are women, so I’m sure they’re showing off their trainers to their friends.”
The boot camp has been running for more than five years and has expanded to cater for more than 200 clients in areas such as Sidcup, Chislehurst and Orpington.
January will see a surge of people looking to get fit after an indulgent December and Andy says the key is to forgive yourself the occasional “slip up”.
He said: “If you have a few drinks one night, don’t worry about it. People beat themselves up too much, and they end up throwing in the towel and having a fry-up.
“You have to get back on the horse or you’ll get stuck in a cyclone of self-destruction, which sounds a bit extreme, but it’s true. The best thing to do is admit you enjoyed it, and then get back down to boot camp and get your poached eggs on.”
